Coat of Arms Armoire Review

This is a real Mahogany armoire, as large and impressive as it looks in the photo. Design Toscano commissions these pieces, and it's nice to be able to have these nice historical objects without paying a fortune. I also bought the King Tut Sculptural Lamp, and am very happy with that.

This is crafted in Indonesia. Don't expect the quality to be comparable to something custom made by a woodworker. The piece is quite light. I don't mind this particularly, as it makes the unit easier to move around. But be aware that the side panels, while being solid wood, are very thin. Some of the carvings on the front are affixed with glue.

The design speaks for itself. It's spectacular. I like dramatic pieces.

The carvings at the bottom are very nice. I love anything carved from wood.

The brass hardware is nice. The interior of the armoire includes two drawers. The drawers don't ride on anything; they lie right on the wood. The drawers themselves seem well made with joinery.

The color is quite a bit darker than it appears in the photo. The older appearance of the wood is a nice touch.

Shipping was excellent! I received the unit in less than a week, via freight. The driver was happy to help me carry the box inside.

Minor quibbles:

-the door doesn't shut perfectly flush. Not a huge deal, and related to the quality issue I mentioned. Some cuts aren't perfect.

-a good deal more care could have gone into the castle carving. It looks a bit haphazard. Not sure if that's intentional.

In conclusion, this is a nice large piece of period furniture for a good price. I'll definitely be buying more from Design Toscano.
