America's premiere historical and Civil War artist Don Troiani painted this scene of the First Texas Infantry Regiment thick in battle at The Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. The regiment was part of General John Bell Hood's Texas Brigade. The 1st Texas suffered heavy casualties during the battle and Hood reported to General Robert E. Lee that his regiment and brigade was "decimated". Antietam was a bloody battle and the Texas Regiment would fight on at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, and other bloody battles until the Army of Northern Virginia under Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his army at Appomattax Court House in April 1865.
